2. One teenager dead, two injured in vigilante beating in North Sumatra.

3. Telkom to merge IndiHome with Telkomsel

Newsworthy Event (Main Event)

1. Indonesia is expanding palm oil plantations to strengthen its position as a global leader in production.

2. Vigilantes beat a 16-year-old boy to death and injured two others for throwing firecrackers into the mosque compound.

3. PT Telkom Indonesia has signed an agreement to spin off its home internet service, IndiHome, to merge with its cellular services arm, Telkomsel.

Background Event (Elaboration)

1. The government has been investing in oil palm plantations to strengthen Indonesia's position as the global leader in palm oil production. Land for new plantation investment has become scarce in Kalimantan and Sumatra, so plantation developers are looking east to acquire land in Papua. Plantation development in Papua has opened up isolated areas, stimulated infrastructure development, generated employment and improved workers' incomes, but indigenous communities' reliance on forests and lack of familiarity with oil palm as a cash crop have been barriers to employment and effective engagement.

2. A 16-year-old boy died and two others were injured after being beaten by vigilantes for throwing lit firecrackers into a mosque compound while a Quran recital was underway in Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, late on Sunday. In a separate development, at least one person was killed and two others injured in a large explosion in Kaliangkrik, Magelang, Central Java, which was allegedly fueled by raw materials for making firecrackers. The police have named several suspects and arrested one person suspected of selling Mufid the materials. Firecracker sales usually increase during Ramadan and Idul Fitri, when many people use them in celebration of the holiday. Police are calling on the public to refrain from lighting firecrackers, citing a provision from the 1951 Emergency Law on the possession of firearms or explosive substances.

3. PT Telkom Indonesia has signed an agreement to spin off its home internet service, IndiHome, to merge with its cellular services arm, Telkomsel. This is to maintain its competitiveness in the domestic telco sector and improve the quality of services provided to customers. Edwin Sebayang, vice president of investor relations at Telkom, said in a statement on Thursday.

Date : 5 April 2023

Time

Title

1. More people expected to ‘mudik’ this year.

2. Life in 2022: How a global pandemic changed payments.

3. Jokowi orders safety audit after deadly Plumpang fire.

Sources

Newsworthy Event (Main Event)

1. The government expects a greater number of people will travel to their hometowns for Idul Fitri during mudik (exodus) this year than in previous years.

2. The outbreak of covid-19 caused many people to switch to digital payments instead of cash.

3. Jokowi is seeking greater accountability from Pertamina Plumpang Depot for the fire and ordering a safety audit to prevent similar incidents.

Background Event (Elaboration)

1. The government expects a greater number of people to travel to their hometowns for Idul Fitri in 2023 than in previous years, with homebound journeys expected to rise by 14.2% to 123.8 million. Almost 75% of the journeys will take place between provinces in Java Island, with the peak of the homebound travel expected to happen on April 21.

2. COVID-19 was a major accelerator in the shift to digital for most people, but it also revealed a structural problem in our reliance on big-box retailers. Merchants are investing in customer and user experience to stand out, and offering local payment methods (LPMs) to boost conversion across borders. The pandemic has led to increased use of contactless, digital payment methods such as mobile e-wallets, bank transfers, and QR codes, and installment payment methods like Klarna and Afterpay, enabling shoppers to defer payments and still buy what they want. Cash-based payment methods remain popular for some economies, but we are closer to a cashless society than ever before.

3. Following Friday’s deadly blaze at the Pertamina Plumpang Depot in North Jakarta that killed at least 17 local residents, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo is seeking greater accountability from the state-owned energy holding company and has also ordered a safety audit for state facilities across the country that posed a similar hazard. The fire started at around 8 p.m. on March 3 and quickly spread to nearby houses in the densely packed neighborhood, causing panic among the local residents before firefighters managed to extinguish the flames on Saturday morning. During a visit to the depot on Sunday, Jokowi instructed his administration to come up with an immediate solution in order to avoid the occurrence of similar incidents.

1. Elon Musk puts Twitter’s value at just $20 billion.

2. The real medical benefits of fasting.

3. An 11-minute daily walk could prevent one in 10 deaths early : study.

Sources

Newsworthy Event (Main Event)

1. Elon Musk has valued Twitter at $20 billion, down from $44 billion.

2. Fasting during Ramadan can have positive effects on physical, mental, and spiritual health.

3. Physical activity can reduce risk of early death by up to 23% with 11 minutes a day.

Background Event (Elaboration)

1. Elon Musk has put the current value of Twitter at $20 billion, less than half the $44 billion he paid for the social media platform just five months ago. In an internal email to employees, Musk describes the brutal contraction in Twitter's value and says the platform was on the verge of bankruptcy. He has sharply cut the group's payroll from 7,500 employees to fewer than 2,000 and said he sees a "clear but difficult path" to a valuation of $250 billion. However, fragments of Twitter's source code were published on the development platform GitHub, confirming a report by the New York Times.

2. Fasting during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan has many health benefits, such as rejuvenating skin cells, nerves and organs, reducing the risk of diseases like Alzheimer's and boosting energy and mood. Eating complex carbohydrates, avoiding whole meats and fritters, reducing salty or fatty foods, and quitting smoking are key to avoiding weight gain during Ramadan fasting. Fasting during Ramadan can have positive effects on physical, mental, and spiritual health, such as improved memory, reducing the risk of dementia, and controlling emotions.

3. A large study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that one in 10 early deaths could be prevented if everyone engaged in a small amount of daily exercise such as a brisk 11-minute walk. The study pooled together the results of 196 previous studies which included more than 30 million people to create one of the largest reviews conducted on the subject. It calculated that around one in six early deaths would have been prevented if everyone in the studies had at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity physical activity, which is the level recommended by Britain's National Health Service. Soren Brage, an expert on the epidemiology of physical activity at Britain's Cambridge University, told AFP that it was "exceptionally good news". He suggested people try getting off at an earlier bus stop on the way to work or cycling home. Cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke killed 17.9 million people globally in 2019, while cancer accounted for nearly 10 million deaths the following year.

1. How to prevent and control diabetes.

2. How flexing of wealth has become a way of life for many Indonesians.

3. Finally responsible : Indonesian consumers are now more conscious with their shopping.

Sources

Newsworthy Event (Main Event)

1. Indonesians should limit sugar, salt and fat consumption to prevent diabetes.

2. Flexing culture in Indonesia is driven by external social pressures, influence, and an individual's initial stage of development.

3. Indonesian customers are becoming more environmentally responsible by buying eco-friendly products and recycling trash.

Background Event (Elaboration)

1. Diabetes is a major cause of death in Indonesia, with over 5.5% of the population consuming more than 50 grams of sugar per day. Prevention and control are key to preventing and controlling the disease. Indonesians should limit sugar, salt and fat consumption to prevent diabetes, but it is also important to cut them immediately and discipline our palates to savor cleaner tastes. ‘Isi Piringku’ is an easy and practical guideline to portion meals according to nutritional requirements, with brown, black or red rice being preferred due to higher fiber content and lower glycemic index. Read the label and cook home-cooked meals to reduce salt intake.

2. Flexing culture in Indonesia has caused a stir due to the arrest of Mario Dandy Satrio and Andhi Pramono, and President Joko Widodo has urged public officials not to flaunt their wealth. Flexing culture is a consumerist trend in which people from all walks of life consume material, not just low-income people. It is driven by external social pressures, influence, and an individual's initial stage of development. Public outrage over public officials' excessive wealth is due to the assumption that public funds are used for welfare and service, not profit/benefits. Public officials should use social media appropriately, as it can increase public trust and vice versa.

3. Indonesian customers are becoming more environmentally responsible and reducing carbon emissions by buying eco-friendly products. Millennials and Generation Z are more concerned with the environment than their more senior counterparts. Didi Kaspi Kasim, editor-in-chief of National Geographic Indonesia, and BASE, a local cosmetics and skincare brand, are working to reduce carbon emissions and offset their unavoidable carbon footprints. SIG Combibloc Indonesia is encouraging Indonesian customers to sort and recycle their trash. Customers are becoming more conscious and environmentally responsible, adopting a minimalist lifestyle and buying only what is necessary.

1. Indonesian shaman accused of killing at least 12 people.

2. Right to Health: The fight over who'll pay hospital bills of India's poor.

3. Tel Aviv: One tourist killed and seven wounded in car-ramming attack.

Sources

Newsworthy Event (Main Event)

1. Indonesian police have arrested a village shaman accused of killing at least 12 people after several bodies were found buried in his garden.

2. Private doctors in Rajasthan protested a bill requiring emergency treatment to be reimbursed by the government.

3. Israeli medics have identified the man killed in a suspected car-ramming attack as Italian citizen Alessandro Parini, 36.

Background Event (Elaboration)

1. Indonesian police have arrested a village shaman accused of killing at least 12 people after several bodies were found buried in the man's garden. Slamet Tohari, 45, admitted to police that dozens of victims were interred on his land and he has been charged with premeditated murder of clients at his home in Banjarnegara in Central Java. He was previously jailed in 2019 for counterfeit money crimes and he faces the death penalty on the current charges. Police said he lured his victims to his house for a daytime ritual, where he would then feed them drinks mixed with potassium cyanide and a sedative. He was arrested this week after the son of his most recent alleged victim told police Tohari's home had been his father's last known location.

Police also detained an accomplice who was promoting money multiplying services on social media. Experts told the BBC that money multiplying scams are common in Indonesia, with many social media posts advertising such services.

2. Private doctors in Rajasthan protested against a bill that made it mandatory for public and private hospitals to offer emergency treatment to people, the costs of which would be reimbursed by the government. Prof Jain's study found that private hospitals were filing claims for higher priced and reimbursed services than those actually provided and charged patients for care that should be free under the programme. Rajasthan needs India's first right-to-health bill to address the gap between promises and reality. The government needs to shore up public health facilities and improve quality of healthcare to ensure an efficient right to health.

3. Israeli medics have identified the man killed in a suspected car-ramming attack near a beach in Tel Aviv as Italian citizen Alessandro Parini, 36. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her "deep sorrow" at Mr Parini's death and described the attack as "cowardly". Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has mobilized police and army reservists and visited the site of the shooting in the West Bank. The attack came after two British-Israeli sisters were killed and their mother injured in a shooting in the occupied West Bank earlier on Friday. The Israeli military carried out air strikes on targets belonging to Hamas in southern Lebanon and the Gaza Strip in response to a barrage of 34 rockets fired from Lebanon. Tensions are high following two nights of Israeli police raids at Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque, which sparked violent confrontations and caused anger across the region.
